Taffner, and he came up with Talk About. I mean, that show was on for two decades, and the prize never really changed. What they were doing was trying to make an entertaining show. I think during that scandal time, it was also before they had a Standards and Practices department that looked into all of these kinds of things. Barry and Enright coming to Canada, though, was a big shot in the arm for all the producers and production companies here to get an industry going as far as game shows were concerned.
I loved that show too. I thought it was really creative. I can remember watching that from time to time. Alex Trebek is an American institution. Is he just as respected and admired, or maybe even more so, in Canada? We take great pride in always mentioning, if anyone cares to ask, that yes, he came from Canada. I know he maintains contact with the University of Ottawa, his Alma Mater, for fundraising events and things like that.
Look at Monty Hall! They did a huge story about Canadian game shows. That included Alex Trebek and Monty Hall. They came out for the big shoot, we had a great time. Sat around and compared notes, compared who we knew and who we worked with. It was a fun weekend in Los Angeles. There are so many good hosts that came from Canada. Alan Thicke, yes!
Even Howie Mandel—shock of the year when he made the transition to game show host, but he fell into the role so beautifully. Howie was great on Deal or No Deal. I wish he was still doing it, because it looked like he had so much fun doing that show. I was! I just wrapped that up, actually. That came at the end…well, not quite the end. Then I got into game shows and talk shows and all of that.
It was good. Partly cloudy with a chance of showers, how could you go wrong? For the longest time, it would just be a guy telling you whether it was going to rain or not; there was no science behind it. It was more of a personality-type thing on the newscast. What do you need to know to be a weatherman in Los Angeles? Sunny sunny sunny sunny sunny.
Not much. Pat was, and is, just a really likable guy. So yeah, the two jobs go together, strangely enough. Game show hosting is trickier than a lot of people think. You gotta get in, you gotta get out. And for a lot of games, you have to get the game to be over in the 22 minutes that you have. They definitely go together. You can draw skills from either side.
Yeah, from time to time, just to see what clips there are of anything. Even with Talk About, that was 30 years ago. I loved that show because it took the greed out of the game. It was based on sort of the same type of show as Newlywed Game, where you ask a question, get an answer, and if the other person matches your answer you get a point.
So what the deal was, it was Mom and Dad and the kids. While the site is the same this year, the look is somewhat different. Vancouver broadcaster Wayne Cox, sporting his own unique style, joins Lisa Nemetz as a new co-host for the season, on a modified set with an even more comfortable ambiance. Since the Legal Wise set backs out on a reception area, Alexander, Holburn has been sensitive about preserving client confidentiality.
Clients are issued a memo about the show on filming dates so that, if they could be even partially visible in the backdrop and do not wish to be, they need only tell the receptionist. Alexander, Holburn notes that it is proud to contribute the use of its office to the program "which the firm hopes will assist in educating the public about how the legal system works.
Clients have expressed curiousity and interest in the production of Legal Wise, says partner David Gooderham. Although the last first-run episode which saw Wayne bringing the entire staff onstage at the end to say goodbye aired in March of , a number of stations continued to show reruns until September; these were from the first Canadian-only season.
Three years after its cancellation, USA aired reruns of "Talk About" as part of its afternoon lineup for the last half of Feb 27, The Vancouver Sun. There are different producers and a different approach to the magazine format, CBC's being more studio-bound at leasts as far as the hosts are concerned and superficial. The word superficial might seem like overkill, considering that this is just another entertainment magazine.
But this program makes After Hours and Entertainment Tonight look like heavy hitters in the industry.

There were 12 segments in the half-hour premiere program, most of them running about two minutes. Count them yourself:. Cox told us that Lyall flew to Los Angeles for the interview with Connery, but it hardly seemed worth the trip considering they gave him only a couple of minutes to answer four questions. But upon graduation, Cox had no idea what he wanted to do with his life.
That all changed with a trip to a downtown radio station in , or rather the basement of a downtown radio station. I enrolled and each week we received instructional records. We listened to the professional voice of someone named Peter Jackson and mimicked his technique. They made us buy tape recorders so we could submit our exercises on cassette to Frank.
Anyone interested? Burlingham and Terry David Mulligan. And more importantly, for Cox, late at night when no one was around, the kid had access to the production room where he recorded mock shows for his demo reels. After a few months, Cox took a break from his internship to canoe the Bowron Lakes. While enjoying the Cariboo backcountry, he learned that a radio-station employee in nearby Quesnel had died in a car crash.
Enough to cover his rent and a steady diet of Kraft Dinner. The position he landed included almost all aspects of running a radio station: reading the news, writing commercials, emptying ashtrays. He also spun records, which produced a kind of dizzying culture shock, because CQ was country. Cox had gone from acid rock to Buck Owens and the Buckaroos in the space of an eight-hour car trip.
Cox left Quesnel for Kamloops where a new station was being launched. He jockeyed the 7 p. Cox did a TV commercial for a travel trailer dealership in Langley.
