The Jackson Five, hired by Motown in , quickly became the hard wing of the label, the funkier one, but their child-voices made it an act for young and old. The first single, I Want You Back , a syncopated dance hit, sold two million copies, and began a series of uninterrupted chart hits, continued by ABC , The Love You Save , and from the romantic gospel I'll Be There by Barry Gordy, all three at the top of the charts and all above one million copies sold, the third even above three.
These and those that came in the next two years were mostly written by the Perren - Mizell -Richards-Gordy quartet. With Dancing Machine they adapted to the funky fashion. Reborn as Jacksons for Gamble and Huff, in they also began to write their own material, now less childish and even more danceable: Destiny was in fact their best album.
The growing technical prestige pushed Michael 12 years old at the time of the first hit to pursue a solo career with Got to Be There and Ben The second, Thriller Epic, , again under the supervision of Jones, gave him as many as six, including the title track by Rod Temperton , Billie Jean and Beat It , and became the best-selling album in the history of the music 51 million copies sold in 20 years, 37 weeks at the top of the Billboard charts.

Jackson was still performing with his brothers at this time, and the overwhelmingly positive response to Off the Wall helped the Jacksons as a group.
