Her neighbor and friend, Jamila, influenced her to learn Hindi and to take up Indian Classical music. Her other sisters were interested in a musical career, and as such they introduced her to Ameen Sayani, who was at the time, the most popular musical producer in India.
This club was located in the basement of the erstwhile Safire theatre complex. This original act was so well received that not only did the nightclub owner ask her to stay on for a week, but it opened the door for other club shows. During this time, she was also singing in multiple clubs in Bombay and then in hotels located in Delhi. It was during these singing acts that a movie producer noticed Usha Uthup and asked her to come on as movie playback singer.
This initial success would catapult her singing career to fame. She was celebrated throughout India and beyond, working on musical numbers in English throughout the late 60s and 70s. She was even made an honorary citizen of Kenya due to her singing of nationalistic songs in Swahili. Throughout the 70s and 80s she recorded albums as well as many songs for popular music directors R.
Throughout the 90s and s her career continued to flourish and remain prominent, with many enjoying her songs and familiar voice.
