Don Ho's success in his career over the past 30 years is not accidental, but it is thanks to his efforts, learning and creativity in each performance. Don Ho is the 4th child in the family, with 2 brothers, 1 sister and 1 younger brother. When he was a child, Don Ho used to go to classical guitar lessons following the trend of his friends, but after only a few sessions, he got bored, then switched to violin but did not get there.

Finally, he switched to painting and felt that he had a talent for painting, since then he has been attached to this field until he came to the US. After , Don Ho's family fell into an extremely difficult situation. After much preparation, the whole Don Ho family left Vietnam together. But unfortunately all the trips failed, each time how much accumulated money was swept away.

In the end, they decided to separate. After a few days of sailing, the ship with the two brothers was "questioned" by the pirates more than 30 times, once Don Ho was carried up and thrown into the deep, black sea, had to swim back to the boat by himself. Fortunately, two years ago, he was taught to swim by his father, so he was able to survive in the middle of the sea.
